About Us

Organization 

The United States Virgin Islands Optimist Dinghy Association, Inc. ("VIODA") is a USVI non-profit corporation which is the official Optimist class association for the United States Virgin Islands. Its mission is to administer the Opti class in the USVI, coordinate youth work among members, and to assist in training, organizing and supporting teams of Optimist sailors in regional, continental and international championships.

 VIODA is a constituent member of Virgin Islands Sailing Association's Board of Delegates. Its members are a divided into three classes: Skipper Members, Associate Skipper Members, and Sustaining Members. 


Skipper Members are those dues-paying members who qualify to compete at the International Optimist Dinghy Association ("IODA") World Championships for the US Virgin Islands, that is, who are residents of the Virgin Islands. Membership is open to residents of all US Virgin Islands.

Associate Skipper Members are those dues-paying members who qualify to compete at the International Optimist Dinghy Association World Champtionships BUT NOT for the US Virgin Islands, that is, non-residents of the USVI.

 Sustaining Members are voting members. They are dues-paying members who are older than the maximum age of competition at the IODA World Champtionship and who support the goals of VIODA.

Standing committees of VIODA  include the Membership Committee, Qualifiers Committee, Regatta Committee, Fundraising Committee, Public Relations Committee and the Training Committee.

Activities

VIODA:

-sponsors local regattas in the USVI for Opti Sailors;

-establishes qualifiers for international regattas;

-selects coaches for international regattas;

-promotes USVI Opti sailors' participation in international sailing events;

-organizes and operates an Advanced Racing Training program for racers;

-offers clinics to help improve sailors' skills;

-promotes sailing-related community service among its members;

-offers sailing mentoring of younger opti sailors by older opti sailors;

-organizers social events for sailors to interact and have fun.
