Scott McKenzie, Jason Putley, Coach Santiago Galán, Chris Murphy, IODA Worlds 2013 Lake Garda, Italy

Teams ISV and IVB concluded their 2012 – 2013 racing season at the 51st Optimist World Championships, held at Fraglia Vela Riva on beautiful Lake Garda in northern Italy, a glacial lake in the foothills of the Alps. Our seven sailors were among the 259 sailors aged up to 15 years representing 58 nations at the event. Loh Jia Yi of Singapore dominated from the start of the regatta, ahead of German Nils Sternbeck, the only skipper who managed to challenge the Singaporean team. Singaporeans finished first, third and first girl in the event.

Shifty, variable winds made for difficult sailing and difficult work for the race committee. Only 10 races were complete over the six days of fleet racing while 12 were planned. The wind did not come up to the northern end of the lake where the regatta was held until well after 1 pm and some days it did not come at all. The last day of racing presented the best conditions for our heavy wind Virgin Island sailors and our sailors saw their best results. The weather was beautiful with bright sun, clear skies and 12-14 knots of wind: a fitting end to a World Championship. Jason Putley finished 10th in the last race and Scott McKenzie 13th.

Rising stars Teddy Nicolosi and Thad Lettsome finish the season with impressive 108 and 174 place finishes respectively at their first world championship while the other five Virgin Island racers conclude their optimist careers with this event. Tentative plans for the future include a full range of boats and training.

Scott McKenzie:

“My next boat is the byte and I start to train right away after Garda for Byte Worlds in Newport at the end of August. I also sail for my high school team in the 420 with my team member and friend, Chris, and may coach some local VI kids in the opti.”

Jason Putley:

“I am already on a Melges 32 team and will do more events with them, and I will sail lasers, as well.”

Chris Murphy:

“I will compete interscholastically with Scott on my high school team in both the 420 and the laser.”

Paige Clarke and Ryan Hunter both plan to sail the byte competitively and compete interscholastically in the 420 for Antilles School, the current high school National Champion in fleet racing.

Scott McKenzie and Chris Murphy attend the Peter Gruber International Academy in St. Thomas. Jason Putley attends the Cedars School in Tortola, BVI.

Best of luck to all sailors in their future endeavors!

McKenzie 6th Overall, 3rd North American

Posted by Ed McKenzie on July 11, 2013 at 12:40 AM Comments comments (0)

Mother nature finally allowed a seventh and final race to be sailed on Wednesday to complete the fleet racing event of the 2013 IODA North American Championships in extremely light 5 - 6 knot conditions out on the Great Sound.  American Shawn Harvey was sitting in 2nd place overall prior to the last race but his 21st place in the final race dropped him down to 4th overall. However, as the highest placing sailor from North America, Harvey is officially the North American Champion! Bermuda's Chase Cooper rose one position after the final race to 5th overall and will join Harvey on the podium as the 2nd North American. The 3rd North American, Scott McKenzie from the U.S. Virgin Islands, was able to leap from 12th to 6th overall after scoring a 7th in the final race. Ceci Wollmann from Bermuda was the top North American Female and 9th overall.

In team racing, USA Team #2 emerged as the eventual winner in the Optinam team racing event after many hard fought battles on the flat waters of Hamilton Harbour on Sunday. The one-day regatta was staged on two short courses separating the North American countries (NA Championship) from the non North American countries (Nations Cup), racing for two different trophies. Over 50 races were sailed.

On the North American course the final came down to USA 2 (Shawn Harvey, Matt Logue, Ryan Hennessey, Louisa Nordstrom and Eduardo Mintzias) vs. The USVI team (Scott McKenzie, Teddy Nicolosi, Mateo DiBlasi, Christopher Murphy, Ryan Hunter). The final is a best of three series. Race 1 was won by USVI by way of a tie break while Race 2 saw another tie but this time USA 2 were given the nod. The third and final race saw USA 2 win convincingly and with it came the championship, the fourth Optinam title in a row for the Americans.

VI Triple Crown Begins in STX

Posted by Ed McKenzie on April 20, 2013 at 11:05 AM Comments comments (7)

The first of three back to back regattas begins in St. Croix this weekend with the Cruzan Open. The event has drawn sailors from St. Thomas, St. John and Tortola to compete in optimist, lasers, sunfish and 420s. At last count 51 boats were registered with 31 in the optimist class.

VIODA's trailer with 7 optis for this event left St. Thomas on the Norma H on Wednesday. Volunteers from SCYC moved the trailer to the club while the St. Thomas sailors, parents and coach took the seaplane to STX Friday after school. Sailors took to the waters this morning in heavy 19 to 22 knot winds only to be called back to shore for the safety of all involved. Sailing is expected to resume today.

Next weekend's 2nd VIODA Championship Regatta in St. John is the second leg of the VI Triple Crown and the BVI Dinghy Championships May 4 and 5 completes the series. Register for both events at www.regattanetwork.com .

Good luck to all the sailors !!!

ISV Sailors Qualify for IODA Championships

Posted by Ed McKenzie on February 11, 2013 at 10:40 PM Comments comments (0)

Chris Murphy and Teddy Nicolosi crossing the finish line at MLK Regatta January 19 and 20

South Americans

Nineteen sailors competed in the Opti Champ fleet at the Columbus Day Regatta on October 6th and 7th at the St. Thomas Yacht Club. This event was the qualifier for IODA South Americans in Brazil at the end of March. The top five ISV finishers were Scott McKenzie, Teddy Nicolosi, Chris Murphy, Chris Sharpless and Jack Finley. Scott McKenzie and Chris Murphy are the only two sailors accepting their spot at this event. They will go to Brazil with Coach Santiago Galán, their coach and trainer since December, 2009.

North Americans

Nineteen sailors again competed in the Opti Champ fleet at the MLK Regatta on January 19th and 20th at the St. Thomas Yach Club. This event was the qualifier for IODA North Americans in Bermuda in early July. The top five ISV finishers were Scott McKenzie, Teddy Nicolosi, Christopher Sharpless, Paige Clarke and Chris Murphy. Due to overwhelming interest in this event among ISV sailors, VIODA has asked IODA for 12 spots at the Bermuda event. The seven additional spots would allow Jack Finley, Caroline Teare, Mia Nicolosi, Mateo DeBlasi, Ryan Hunter, Chuck Finley and Julian van den Driessche to compete in this event.

Worlds

Thirty six sailors competed in the Optimist Advanced fleet at the 12th International Regatta held February 1st to the 3rd at Club Nautico de San Juan, Puerto Rico. This event was the USVI qualifier for the IODA World Championship in Riva del Garda, Italy in late July. The top five ISV finishers were Scott McKenzie, Paige Clarke, Chris Murphy, Chris Sharpless and Ryan Hunter. This is the first time in five years that all three US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, St.John and St. Croix, will have sailors on Team ISV for an Optimist World Championship.

Sailors and their families have until Friday, February 15 to accept their spot on the team for IODA North Americans and Worlds.

Congratulations to all!
